Are you feeling the pull to start spring cleaning yet? Depending on the weather where you live, you have maybe had a couple of sunny days that get you excited for more daylight and warmer temps. It’s a great time to think about how to organize a closet!
Do’s & Don’ts When Organizing Your Closet
Our closets tend to be the first areas of clutter when it comes to our living spaces. Because of how frequently we are in and out of our closets, organizing will always be an ongoing process. Thankfully, there are certain rules you can follow to ensure you are never faced with constant closet clutter again!
While everyone’s space is different, and you yourself may have closets in a number of different areas of your home – these tips are universal! From your game closet to your bedroom closet, challenge yourself to abide by these do’s and don’ts from here on out!
Do…
Implement Color Coordination
Color coordinating can feel tedious at times. However, this is the type of time investment you make now that will ultimately save you copious amounts of time later on. We commonly forget about certain clothes or shoes we own when everything is a mess.
When you arrange your belongings in a systemized fashion, that problem is eliminated! Color coordinating has a lot of benefits, but can be a little overwhelming for some. If that’s the case for you, start off by separating sweaters, shirts, dresses, and pants. You can still declutter in no time without feeling overwhelmed.
Utilize Clear Bins
Whether it be a place to store your shoes in your wardrobe, or a systemized yet modern touch to your linen closet, clear storage bins will save you a lot of time when searching for your items. It is very common to just throw our shoes at the bottom of the closet and assume the rule “out of sight, out of mind.”
While this can be a great temporary fix, you will constantly be searching for your pair of shoes and it may cause you troubles in the long run. Choosing to take the clear storage route, gives you the best of both worlds. Your shoes will have a designated home, yet you can find them at a glance!
Don’t…
Forget About Shelves
Shelves are typically so underrated yet so helpful when optimizing your storage spaces. There are only so many hooks and hangers that can fit into your closet. By putting shelves low on the wall or even above the bulk of your clothes, you can seamlessly add in additional space.
These platforms are great for placing your clear bins onto as well! Although, higher placed shelves can be somewhat inconvenient depending on the layout of your closet, it’s a great place to strategically store out of season clothes here.
Overcrowd Your Closet
Cleaning out your closet also provides you with a great opportunity to get rid of some things as well. Most likely, you will need to donate a lot of your items to achieve the organization you are looking for. When you have too many items cluttering a space, it is so easy for you to get overwhelmed and not give everything a designated “home.”
Separating the closet into categories is a perfect way for you to space everything out. Before you put everything into the wardrobe, map out where everything will be placed and give yourself a set number of what you can comfortably fit into the space.
Before you begin this process, take an inventory of the current state of your closets. From there, choose what pieces are in need of optimization the most. Start here! As you move from room to room, you will actually feel your mood brighten and the overall feel of your house become less stressful.
