How to Make Stencils with Cricut

Let’s talk today about making stencils with Cricut! There are a few different materials that you can use to make stencils, and it really depends on what you are putting the stencil on that dictates what you should use.

Cricut stencil material is similar to vinyl. It’s sticky, but not very strong, so it will stick to a surface but come off easily. Buy stencil material here.

It’s great for painting onto hard surfaces because the adhesive keeps out any bleed – See my Cricut stencil shoe bench.

Acetate sheet is sturdy and can be reused, but paint can easily bleed under. Use on a smooth surface with a “dabbing” motion for paint to reduce bleed – See my canvas covered diaper box.

Use for cookie decorating – perfect for airbrushing on frosted cookies.

Freezer paper magically sticks to fabric when ironed! Paint designs with fabric paint as an alternative to HTV.

Use on shirts, bags, or other fabric, like these toy storage bags made from canvas drop cloth.

Every piece has to be positioned individually though, so be aware of small cuts or inside pieces – it might not be worth it.

Adhesive vinyl may work in some instances, but it can’t be reused, and the vinyl may have a hard time either releasing from the transfer tape (like on a soft surface) or releasing from the project (like a hard surface.)
