How to Sew A Fur Pillow

{Tutorial for a soft and fluffy faux fur pillow}

 Back in December I made a fur vest for my daughter.  I wanted one for her Christmas outfit I was putting together, and decided to just go for it and make one.  And it turned out so cute!  I had a bunch of faux fur leftover though (I’d made sure to buy extra in case I messed it up)

I asked on Instagram what I should do with the rest of it, and as soon as pillow was mentioned I knew that was the winner.

I made my own pillow form too, but you could use a pillow you already have.  The tricky thing is that this white fur is a little see through, so I couldn’t try wrapping the dark pillow I already had.

Anyway, here’s what you’ll need to make this pillow

  • faux fur 28 x 23 inches
  • muslin or other white fabric (I also had this leftover from the vest) 23 x 20 inches
  • stuffing (I used the insides of an old throw pillow)
  • X-acto knife or box cutter
  • sewing machine and thread
  • cardboard to protect your work surface from the box cutter
TIP:  How to Cut Faux Fur
I learned that the correct way to cut fur is to turn it upside down and cut it from the back.  It will keep the fur on the front looking nice.
To make the pillow form, fold the fabric so it’s 11.5 x 20 inches and sew the long side and one short side with a 1 inch seam allowance.  Turn inside out and stuff.  Sew the last seam close to where the stuffing ends.  Cut remaining fabric to about 1 inch (this will be a visible seam, but it doesn’t matter)
Lay the pillow form on the piece of fur (fur side down) and over lap the fur on the top of the pillow.
Use pins to close the fur around the pillow form on one side. On the other side, just mark the end of the pillow with one pin. Slide the form out and sew both sides of the fur.
Now turn the pillow cover right side out and put the pillow form into the back, where the fur overlaps but isn’t sewn shut.
I hope this tutorial will get you to try sewing with faux fur. And in other fur news, I totally bought myself a fur vest from the thrift store for $4.50 last week! If I can figure out what to pair it with, I may post about it 🙂
