Small bathroom ideas for organization and decorating

A couple of years ago we had our bathroom redone and I never got around to posting about it. Now is the perfect time to show you though, and give you all my tips for dealing with a tiny bathroom, both storage and color.

This bathroom is the only one we have in our house other than the master bathroom, so all 3 of our kids claim it, plus it’s the ones guests use. I had to think about the best way to use the space, and how to decorate it without being too juvenile.

The wall color is Behr Celtic Gray (but it really has a blueish-green look to it), and we love it.  I think it’s the first color I’ve ever painted where I loved it as soon as it was on the wall (usually it takes me a day or two to have a color grow on me)

Here are 5 simple decor and organizing ideas that will work for any small bathroom.

1–Use the walls. We installed 2 floating shelves from IKEA, the towels each have their own hook (add a loop of ribbon to each towel so they’re easy for the kids to hang), and a framed piece of chicken wire holds all the hair clips.

2–Hang toothbrushes inside the cabinet door in DIY toothbrush holders (click for tutorial)

3–Don’t keep cleaning supplies under the sink. Besides the fact that this is a bad idea with little kids around anyway, and the fact that we store their toothbrushes in the cabinet door, you really don’t want to use valuable space in the bathroom with items that could be stored elsewhere. I have a basket of cleaners in my linen closet so we can fill this cabinet with extra toilet paper. TP is more important anyway, especially for the one bathroom in the house that gets used by the kids and all guests.

4–Pick a neutral color and one or two other colors to decorate. Since this bathroom is for our kids, I decided to embrace the boy and girl aspect and go with pink and blue, and a dark gray. With limited space in a small bathroom too many colors could be hard to do.

5–Use baskets. Since there is no counter space at the vanity, baskets on the shelves are necessary to contain all the hair brushes, lotion and toothpaste. I bought little wooden flag shapes from the craft store, painted them, and tied them on the baskets with pink and blue ribbon.

And I have to tell you about my absolute favorite toilet paper  holder–the bar pivots–no springs to deal with, so even kids can replace the roll!
