I wrote this post as part of a paid campaign with Plaid Crafts, Michaels and Blueprint Social. The opinions in this post are my own.
No matter what the weather’s doing outside, it’s never a bad time to make something that involves flowers. Micheals has a whole collection of fun Spring Wood Surfaces providing endless decorating possibilities. This framed box turned flower display features Martha Stewart Vintage Décor Paint by Plaid Crafts and stencils too.
All these items can be picked up at Michaels and the process is easy. Let’s get started!
You’ll need:
Martha Stewart Crafts Décor Paint: Ivory and Antique Sky
Martha Stewart Crafts Clear Vintage Décor Wax
Martha Stewart Crafts Vintage Décor Paint Brush
Martha Stewart Crafts Vintage Décor Stencils, Fleur de Lis
Regular paint brush and a stencil brush
Wooden framed shadow box
Large white flower
Hot glue
Sandpaper
Start by painting the box and frame with Antique Sky and let dry (use a regular paint brush for this and save the fancy one for the wax.) Let dry.
Paint just the frame with two coats of Ivory, drying between each coat.
Use the sandpaper to distress the frame and let some of the base color show through.
With a stiff stencil brush and one of the stencils, paint the pattern with Vintage Sky. Dab extra paint off onto a plate or paper towel. You want a pretty dry brush when stenciling so it doesn’t seep under the cut outs.
Line up each part of the pattern and continue until the frame is covered. Sand after it’s dry for additional distressing if desired.
To apply the wax, simply brush over the whole box and frame. It spreads easily and is about the consistency of a very soft butter. Wipe off the excess with a damp towel. Let dry and apply a second coat with the same process. After it’s dried and cured for 24 hours, take a clean dry cloth and buff the entire piece.
For the final exciting part, take your large flower (remove from stem with wire cutters) and use hot glue to secure it in the center of the box.
What do you think? You could add a small hanger on the back to put it on the wall, but I just put a scrap piece of 2×4 under it to display on my entry table.
Here are more ways to use the wood surfaces from Michaels.
