Happy Labor Day to all my US and Canadian friends! We’ve been hanging out north of the border to celebrate our last weekend before school starts.
Easy kid projects are always a hit around here. We made these wood necklaces at craft camp, and I first shared this post at Brassy Apple back in June. In case you missed it, here it is again.
My husband recently helped some friends transfer a bunch of tree branches in his truck, so I asked if he’d kindly bring one of them home for me. He probably thought (er, thinks) I’m a little nuts.
Especially when I told him I didn’t know exactly what I wanted it for, but I knew I wanted a bunch of wood medallions to do something with. So he was awesome and brought me one. And also cut it up for me with his miter saw!
Each piece is about 1/4 inch thick and about 2 inches across. I sanded the flat sides, and around the bark as well to remove the layer of moss. You may not have that problem where you live 🙂 and told my girls to draw whatever they wanted.
I love them and they had so much fun! To turn them into actual necklaces I drilled a 3/8 inch hole at the top of each wood piece. A drill press works awesome for this because the hole will be totally straight. You can use a regular drill too–of course always use caution when using power tools!
I added a 12 mm split ring and then threaded ribbon through it to make the necklace.
These finished ones are missing the ring of bark around the edges, and here’s why: They were a little damp right after being cut, so I put them in a low-heat oven for about an hour.
This caused the bark to separate and split off though, so I had to remove it. The rest of my pieces just air dried in the garage for a week and have been fine.
I decided to use paint on mine.
If you make some, I’d love to see pictures. Leave a link here or on my Facebook page!
What do you think I should do with the rest of the wood discs I have?
