It’s time for the Craft Camp series at Sowdering About! (Visit her blog for more craft and DIY ideas too.) Today I will show you how to make your own watercolors and help your kids paint a beautiful sunset cityscape.

I’m a sucker for a good sunset. We don’t seem to get too many where we live right now, and it’s a combination of a few things. Either there are too many trees in the way or we don’t have the right combination of sun and clouds. But we can make our own beautiful sunset art.

Here’s what you’ll need:
Watercolor paper, cut in half, 6 x 9 inches
Black construction paper, cut into 5 x 9 inch pieces
Acrylic paint
Ice cube tray
Brushes, pencil, scissors, glue stick

To make the watercolor, put 1-2 tablespoons of water into a few wells of the ice tray. Squirt in a small amount of acrylic paint and stir to mix.

We used several yellow/orange/red colors but you can mix it up if you want. Let the kids paint different streaks of color across the paper, blending with more water as they go along.

While the paint dries, have them draw a city skyline–lots of rectangles and triangles–then cut along the line. Make sure there are connecting lines between each building.

Paint windows if desired with yellow paint. We used q-tips, but a brush would work also..

When all the paint is dry, glue the city onto the sunset and enjoy the masterpieces!

What do you think? Will you try this with your kids? Be sure to check around Randi’s site for more kid craft ideas, and here are all the Craft Camp activities I did last year.
