Lace Stenciled Dresser

I received a stencil to review but all thoughts and opinions are my own.

{How to stencil dresser drawers}

When I saw this lace stencil I knew I wanted to put it on a dresser!

My husband originally painted this dresser over 5 years ago to go in our son’s room before he was born. We recently got him a new dresser, and I got to try something fun a girly on this one. Here’s what it looked like before.

I painted the dresser and drawers first with a dark gray chalky paint. When two coats were dry I set the stencil down on the front of the drawer. This is the small Fleur de Lace Stencil from Royal Design Studio.

I used a very light gray paint color (that pretty much looks white) for the stencil and used a foam roller to apply it. I’m not sure if it was because I was outside in the sun, or because I needed to wash my stencil more often, but bits of dried paint started peeling off of the stencil and getting stuck to the roller, making the stenciled paint kind of bumpy. I fixed this later just with a light sanding, but maybe I would have been better off using a stiff stenciling brush instead of trying to roll it on.

Anyway, as you finish one section, lift up the stencil and lay it down again, lining up the registration marks. Repeat with more paint.

After all the stencil paint is dry, I made some necessary touch ups with the dark gray paint and a small paint brush.

For a top coat, I brushed on a clear varnish but satin polycrylic would work great too. When the drawers went back in it all looked so cool! What do you think of the stenciled dresser?

Just looking around on the Royal Design Studio site will give you lots of ideas. Even stenciling only the top of a coffee table or one wall in a room can make it so much more interesting.

Do you have a piece of furniture that would look great with a stencil update? What would you paint?
