5 Things to Take on a Trip to New York City

1–Purse with a lot of zippers and compartments. You don’t want to be THAT person at the subway entrance fumbling through your giant bag to find your wallet with your metro card in it. If there are a lot of divided sections in the purse it’s easy to find what you’re looking for, from your wallet to sunglasses to phone. Just make sure it’s on the small side. You don’t want it to be too big or heavy, and it’s nice to be able to swing it around to carry in front of you in large crowds.

2–A small wallet. You don’t need to be carrying around your whole collection of credit cards, store cards, punch cards, etc. You only need a slot for your ID, a card or two, your metro card, and a bit of cash.

3–Hand sanitizer. You’ll be riding the subway a lot, with a lot of other people, and it’s always nice to know you can have clean hands before you eat your next piece of pizza.

4–Good shoes. I know I just said you’ll ride the subway a lot, but you’ll be walking even more! You’ll want to walk around the different neighborhoods you visit, like Greenwich Village, Wall Street and Brooklyn. You’ll walk around Central Park and across the Brooklyn Bridge.

So you want to take care of your feet. BZees sent me some Lifetime Loafers to try out and they were great for our trip. The BZees shoes are also completely washable, so the day that they got totally soaked in the rain in Brooklyn, I knew they’d come out of it just fine.

5–External charger for your phone. People used to recommend taking a compass to NYC so you could know which way you’re facing when you come up out of the subway. But now with GPS and maps on our phones, we can just keep looking up directions. All of that tracking, plus searching “best pizza near me” can drain a phone battery during the day, and you won’t want to get to the point where it’s completely dead. We took a big beefy one that could charge each of our phones completely, from dead if needed. It can also charge two phones at once.

Have you been to New York City before? What do you think is a must-pack item?
