I was about to get rid of this chair, but decided to give it one more chance…
This is the second makeover I’ve done on this chair, and in a way, this chair is the reason I began blogging in the first place! My blog started in February 2011, but I’d been part of online communities since about 2005-ish. Group message boards about babies, scrapbooking, die cut machines, etc. I was constantly posting “off-topic” threads to share my crafty and diy ventures. I thought blogs were just for tech-y people, and angst filled teens as a way to vent against their parents (not sure where I got those ideas!!) Anyway, after I posted a before and after pic of this chair on the Make the Cut forum, it really got the wheels turning that maybe I needed a different way to share all my projects. And this blog was created a few months later.
These are the products I used on this chair: Americana Decor chalky finish paint (available at Home Depot) The blue color is Treasure and the gray is Relic. The top coat is their soft touch varnish and the white for the stripes is Americana multi-surface in White Birch.
The great thing about the chalky finish is that you don’t need to sand or prime or anything! It took two coats to cover it nicely, and the first coat will look like this–a little scary.
But then with the second coat the brush marks and light lines all disappear.
To change up the seat I first painted it all with Relic. It took a couple coats because the fabric soaked some up naturally.
Then it was time for stripes. I used some Duck Tape and just eyeballed the spacing. I painted some gray on the edge to help the lines stay clean. When that dried I painted two coats of White Birch and pulled up the tape. The stripes worked out great this way–if I had tried to find striped fabric I liked and recover the seat, I’m not good enough to have kept the lines straight while pulling the fabric underneath to stretch and attach it.
