Taping Materials to Cricut Mat

Today’s Cricut tip is that sometimes you’ll need to tape a material to the mat. Let’s talk about when that is helpful, or needed.

You should tape your material to your Cricut mat if …

  • a material needs multiple passes, like basswood or leather
  • a material isn’t sticking well to the mat (maybe the mat is getting old and less sticky)
  • a material won’t lay flat at the edges

Cutting basswood with the knife blade can take 10 passes or more, and you want to make sure that the material isn’t shifting at all during those passes.

Some HTV plastic carriers are too slick for even the strong grip mat to hold it in place.

Vinyl or HTV that has been tightly rolled may want to still curl up.

I used this technique when cutting a thin sheet of baked polymer clay to make earrings.
