Last year I made this potholder with my kids as a Mother’s Day gift for my mom. This is a fun and easy way to turn some of your kids’ artwork into a useful gift for grandma, mom, teachers or friends! Ink Effects paints are used like regular paint then transferred to fabric with an iron.
Here’s what you’ll need:
- Potholder
- White fabric
- Ink Effects paints and base spray (make sure your fabric is more than 30% cotton…mine was 50%)
- Paint brushes
- White printer paper
- Iron
Have your kids paint a picture or pattern on some paper. **Remember that images will be reversed when transferred**
Let the paint dry, or speed with an hair dryer. Be aware that the paint on the paper will look different from the lid color, but it will match when it’s ironed on.
Next mist fabric with the base spray and let dry. Place images face down onto the fabric and cover with another plain white paper. Iron for 3 minutes, keeping the iron moving over the paper.
Cut fabric from the paper and pin to the potholder. Sew with a zig-zag stitch around each piece.
Trim the corners and threads and it’s all done. To package it up, I just put in a blue bowl with tongs and a new spoon that I’d painted on the ends.
