Morning Chores for Kids

This post brought to you by The Gorilla Glue Company. The content and opinions expressed below are that of Crafting in the Rain.

Do you struggle with how to set up chores and job charts for your kids? I know I have, and I’ve tried a few different ways to assign jobs, keep track of them, keep them age appropriate, etc. And that’s a chore in and of itself! This has been the best system for us for setting up jobs that the kids can do before school. I don’t have to tell them what to do everyday, and the jobs rotate between kids without me having to remember to spin a wheel or update a list.

You can follow this idea exactly, or adjust it for your needs. There are jobs written on each stick, and every morning the kids each have to pick one out and do it (in addition to their regular stuff, like making sure they are ready for school.)

Supplies to make your pretty can:

  • Can, clean and spray painted (mine is gold)
  • Leather (this piece came from a scrap bag at the craft store)
  • Large popsicle / craft sticks
  • Ribbon / lace
  • Scrapbook paper
  • Gorilla Super Glue Brush & Nozzle
  • Sandpaper
  • Gel pen

Start by cutting a piece of leather that will wrap all the way around the can. Glue it to the can with Gorilla Super Glue, then overlap and glue the seam. This bottle of Gorilla Super Glue has two ways to use it- a nozzle and a brush. Use the nozzle end of the glue to get a few drops out. The glue has a thicker consistency than you might expect, making it easier to control and use.

Tie pieces of ribbon around the leather. You can secure them with a bit of glue if you want, but I didn’t, and I don’t think they’ll slip at all.

Write jobs on the sticks. I first used a permanent marker, but it bled really bad in the wood grain of the stick. A gel pen worked perfectly.

Decorate ends of the sticks. Trace the end of a stick onto some paper, cut, and use it as a pattern to make all the others at once. Then use the Gorilla Super Glue brush end to put a bit of glue on the end of a stick. The brush gives great coverage. Place the paper and press for a few seconds. When all the sticks have paper glued to them, use the sandpaper to rub away the extra edge of paper.

I also decorated the other end because I had some of this gold trim that fit perfectly.

This way, when a job is complete, the child will turn the stick over and just the gold tip will show. Each Monday we’ll turn everything back over again so the paper ends are showing.

Here’s the packaging up close of the glue I used, which was perfect for all parts of this project. It works great on wood, metal, ceramic (not coffee cups or anything that would go in a dish washer), rubber, leather, paper and some plastics. It dries quickly and is available at hardware and home center stores nationwide.

Here’s a list of all of the jobs. I included 15 – one per kid per day.

  • Bathroom counters
  • Bathroom sinks
  • Bathroom mirrors
  • Mop bathroom & laundry room
  • Sweep family room
  • Dust family room
  • Knobs and switches upstairs
  • Knobs and switches downstairs
  • Empty trash
  • Dust living room
  • Sweep living room
  • Sweep main hall/ entry
  • Sweep front porch
  • Vacuum upstairs hall

Great idea to help with those chores! I think I should make one for myself.... haha! No kids living at home any more, but I sure can get distracted from my chores!
