Make Baking Sheets Shiny Again

Cleaning

1 Apr 2014

Raise your hand if you have cookie sheets that look a little worse for wear. Have you seen a couple of different methods to get cookie sheets looking like new? Mine were awful, and I’d tried a couple of different Pinterest-proved ways to get them shiny again, but they didn’t work.

I had to make up my own.  Let’s learn how to clean baking sheets. So easy–shiny baking sheets will be yours again!

You just need mustard (for the acid) maple syrup (for the sugar) and salt (’cause it’s grainy)

How to Clean Cookie Sheets

1–Pour some of each ingredient onto the sheet and rub. Not coming clean yet? Keep rubbing!
2–Rub in a circular motion, never vertical
3–Rub 15 circles, then stop and count to 10, then rub 15 more circles

4–If it’s still not coming clean, hop on one foot while rubbing in circles.
5–If you’ve got some extra stubborn spots, start singing “Dancing Queen” by ABBA and they should come right off.

6–Rinse
7–Place in the trash can
8–APRIL FOOL’S
9–Skip all previous steps and just purchase new cookie sheets!

And that my friends, is the only real way you’re ever going to get sheets that look like new!
Here are the sheets I like – the half sheet 2 pack is the best deal:

Materials

  • New baking sheets

Instructions

  1. Throw old sheets away
  2. Buy new baking sheets

Notes

Some people have shared that oven cleaner does a pretty good job at cleaning the sheet. I went for the "buy new" option.

One friend said to never trust someone with clean cookie sheets, which would mean you're off the hook!

Too funny! I use parchment baking sheets so my pans never get looking that way. They do lose their shine but they never get dark. That would be my secret – from cookies to meat – and it makes cleanup so much easier too.

To react in such a way to a good-natured joke, I can only assume that something really hard is happening in your life right now. I'm sorry you're having a hard time, and I hope things get better for you.

What if I don't have maple syrup? May I substitute it with something else?

      put your
maple sugar on pancakes, your mustard on a hot dog and salt on your popcorn. Don’t stress about stained cookie sheets.

You almost had me. I was sitting here thinking "I have the salt and mustard at home, just need the syrup!" Nicely done!

Seriously. I was thinking "mustard and maple syrup (that's table syrup by the way haha)….what the heck kind of cleaning is that?! I'm not wasting my good maple syrup on this!" hahahaha!! I did this last year. I tried the baking soda thing….didn't work. Maybe if I kept coming back to it and scrubbing. BUT, nope, I have 3 boys and homeschool…Ain't nobody got time for that. I went out and bought new ones. HAHA

There is a real way to clean it and it's not too expensive. All you need is a brillo pad like the one to sand shaved them off. Both work. Try it. Not a joke.

Sorry, I skipped some words: Buy brillo pad, the one used to sand wood and ajax and scrubb away. I have also tried using a knife or a razon and shave off the stuck on grime. Both work, no joke.

Spray them with oven cleaner and just follow the directions on the can, if they are really bad it may take a couple of tries but they will come out all shinny I promise

That was good it pulled me in and had me going. But if you really want to clean a cookie sheet; get a trash bag large enough to hold your sheet then spray with oven cleaner place in trash bag set out in the sun. It may take a day or two but it does work. (Caution, fumes and it eats off non stick coating)

Haaaaaa… All kidding aside though, I DO have a way to get them clean (not shiny but clean) that works amazingly well. I simply put my cookie sheets in the oven when I run the self cleaning feature and they come out great. Seriously (no April Fools) it works great and NO SCRUBBING!

I just warm my oven, then shut it off. I spray the trays with oven cleaner and place them in the warm oven. I leave them in all night. The next morning the caked on crud rinses right off. You might have to lightly scrub one or two spots but basically they are completely clean. Rinse with hot water and DONE!

Good one, Stephanie, you cracked me up! Seriously, I do the same thing – buy new ones! For cookies, I have dedicated pans and use parchment paper like one of your other responders. My bread pans are dedicated, too, and I have a separate pan for meat loaf. Almost everything else is glass and goes in the dishwasher but sometimes I use a couple of Efferdent tablets for stuck-on crusty food. Works great!
